LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

For Mental Health Continuum Schools and Staff

NYC Public Schools provides school and central teams with access to a comprehensive collection of mental health and wellness professional learning opportunities. Each Mental Health Continuum school receives supplemental funding each year to ensure that their staff are trained on best practices for providing multi-tiered academic and behavioral services, including when and how to refer students for more intensive clinical services. See below for more information about some of these professional development offerings.

School and central staff should check with their supervisor for available funding to cover training costs. Mental Health Continuum funding can be used for these purposes.

THINK KIDS

Think Kids provides school staff with tools to recognize the root cause of student misbehavior and to support students with developing positive behavioral skills. Think Kids Collaborative Problem Solving method is research-based and has been demonstrated to yield improvements in children’s executive functioning skills, thereby increasing desired behaviors and reducing oppositional behaviors.

LIVES IN THE BALANCE

Lives in the Balance is a vendor that specializes in providing district- and school-based practitioners with the strategies and practices for reaching students needing differentiated behavioral supports. Their Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model is intended to support schools in moving away from punitive and exclusionary disciplinary practices by using an evidence-based model of care that engages kids in identifying the problems that are causing problematic behaviors. Their website includes free resources for schools as well as more information about trainings.

LET’S TALK

Let’s Talk NYC aims to increase communication around mental health in our city’s schools by encouraging students to reach out to school staff and providing staff with training to help them support students. Let’s Talk NYC was developed by the Mayor’s Office of ThriveNYC, NYC Public Schools, the Office of School Health, School Mental Health Program, The Jed Foundation, and Ogilvy Health. See links for more information, resources, and access to training registration.

TREP
